Book Review- Bone by Fae Myenne Ng

This was a book I had to read for uni, so it's likely that not many people have heard of this unless they were recommended it or had to read it like I did.

This was definitely an interesting novel, mainly because it starts at the end and works its way backwards to the beginning, which is something I don't think I've ever seen before. It's so weird to start with the characters miserable and then work their way back to happiness. Which on the one hand is kind of endearing but at the same time then you remember that the characters are left being miserable. Like what? I feel like my emotions have been mind-warped.

The novel covers the important issue of dealing with the suicide of a family member. Especially in a traditional Chinese family living in America. It was so insightful to see all their traditions, especially when it comes to funerals and symbolism. But that's just something I've been picking up from reading lots of different examples of world literature.

Overall, I would give this novel a 2/5 stars as whilst it was interesting to read it wasn't the most gripping of stories and I found myself wandering off bored and skimming and scanning pages just trying to reach the end. If you're looking for a more cultural read then I would definitely recommend this, but otherwise this isn't something I would choose to read again.

So that's it for this review. Just short and sweet I'm afraid. I'm trying to organise a better style of how to review books for the future so if you have any tips I would love to hear them!
